About Gordon Shaw

Born in Liverpool, Gordon’s training was in graphics and print.  He later took up lecturing full time in art and design.  He currently lives in Cambridge with a studio in Royston and finds inspiration through the natural environment across East Anglia.
Gordon moved to East Anglia in the 1970’s. He had a career in art education for twenty-five years before taking early retirement to pursue a career as a full-time artist.

“Since early in my artistic career I have had a great passion for the coast, the sea and the point where land meets sea. An early childhood fascination was always the river, edge of the water, ferry crossings, debris on a beach still prevails.
I often travel to coastal regions in Cornwall, Scotland, Norfolk and various venues in France, Portugal and Spain for inspiration. Remote places have the power to draw me. The seas and the beaches are infinite mysteries. Timeless primordial feeling reach the inner self. There are moments of calm and yet the sense that the sea can be also too powerful. It leaves its mark on the beach, the cliff, on the smallest stone. Fragments and erosion by natural forces play their part inspiring and informing my work.

Over past years my painting has been a response to the coastal elements keeping a degree of representation and expression dealing with a way of understanding the connections I was making. More recently my work has moved towards abstraction and minimal mark making, the elimination and leaving out in order to focus on a different sense of perceiving the environment.
I work in mixed media exhibiting and selling locally and nationally.”
